Omicron’s Delhi Community Transmission in 50% of Cases: Sources

India has seen an increase in Covid cases over the last few weeks.

All samples from metro cities – which have tested positive for Covid – are being sent for genome sequencing, government sources said today, amid fears of an Omicron-powered third wave. In India, 18% of the newly tested samples had the new variant.

In Delhi, the new variant – which is said to be highly contagious – has been found in 50 percent of the samples tested positive since December 12, said health ministry sources confirming the spread of Omicron in the national capital.

Delhi has recorded nine Covid deaths this month, the highest in the last four months as the national capital continues to see a worrying increase in cases. On Thursday, 1,313 new infections were registered – the largest daily increase in seven months.

Earlier this week, the Arvind Kejriwal government had brought new restrictions under “yellow alarm”, including the closure of cinemas, schools, among other curbs.
