KL Rahul leads India in ODI against South Africa, Rohit Sharma misses series due to injury | Cricket news

KL Rahul will be captain of the Indian cricket team in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, where white-ball captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out due to an injury. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been named vice-captain of the team for the three-match series. Chetan Sharma, director of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), informed at a virtual press conference on Friday that Rohit is undergoing rehabilitation to recover from his injury. “We decided not to send him because he can work on his muscles. Must be 100 percent fit for the World Cup. All the selectors had a good talk with Rohit,” Chetan Sharma said at the press conference.

Rohit was previously ruled out of the squad for the ongoing Test series against South Africa. KL Rahul has been his deputy in the tests. The 18-man squad includes senior opening butcher Shikhar Dhawan and also has people like Ruturaj Gaekwad, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan. Virat Kohli, Shreya Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer have been named in the squad and they will form India’s strong middle order.

Ravichandran Ashwin has been recalled to the ODI fold after a long time. He wants play spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and offie Washington Sundar to join him. The tempo department will be headed by Jasprit Bumrah, who has been given the extra responsibility of being the team captain. He has people like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj to company. Mohammed Shami has been rested for the series.
