Gautam Gambhir will help ‘create a plan’, says Lucknow IPL franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhirs appointment on Saturday as team mentor for the new Lucknow franchise of Indian Premier League (IPL) is a step towards building an inclusive team environment “geared towards a performance culture”, owner Sanjiv Goenka of RPSG Group told TOI.
Gambhir is expected to have an advisory role in the franchise and will be the “governing hand” when it comes to setting the team’s plans and improving the player’s performance. The former Indian opening batsman led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014.
“Gautam will primarily have a motivating role to play,” Goenka said. “He also wants to help create a blueprint for the franchise in the long term. We wanted to have people with a proven track record of success. Gautam has also successfully nurtured a generation of young people for KKR, and it went to his advantage. ”

Gambhir will work with new head coach Andy Flower, meaning the Lucknow backroom now has two no-nonsense former cricketers, both with enormous tactical knowledge and both known for an intense approach to the game. They were also stubborn and irritable in their time.
“Gautam has an image of being a total party political leader with a focus on results. See what he did for KKR. Basically, we like the locker room to be geared towards a performance culture, ”said Goenka.

RPSG Group has previously been involved in the IPL with the Rising Pune Supergiant franchise, but things are very different this time around, according to Goenka.
“It was just a short two-year thing. We were impatient and left a lot of things unfinished. This (Lucknow) is oriented towards the long term as not many franchisees have come in and succeeded in the first year themselves.”
Many other IPL franchises like Delhi Capitals have complained that the auction process has outlived its usefulness where teams are forced to give away players that they have nurtured from a young age or prepared for the big time.

Things are different for Lucknow, who need to build a team from scratch. Goenka was tight-lipped about the team’s plans – which are rumored to include going aggressively after KL Rahul as first-choice captain at the auction – and only revealed that “we have reset a few names”.
“I have to follow the system,” he said. “I have no role in the rules and regulations. That said, the biggest inspiration for me is the Mumbai Indians. What they have achieved and how they have done it is a template for not only other IPL teams, but also sports franchises around the world. ”
Gambhir, also a BJP politician and a sitting MP from East Delhi, said in an official statement: “The fire to win a competition still
burning brightly inside me. The desire to leave a winning legacy still kicks me 24×7. I do not want to compete for a dressing room, but for the spirit and the soul of Uttar Pradesh. ”
