Omicron Coronavirus India Live: India’s Covid-19 active cases lowest in over 18 months; Omicron is 101


Coronavirus LIVE news: With the number of Omicron cases rapidly rising in the country, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) sent a call to avoid unnecessary travel and mass gatherings and to observe low-intensity festivities. “Local restrictive measures” are to be implemented in 24 districts of seven states, including nine in Kerala and eight in Manipur, with a weekly test positivity of over 5 percent.

The center also warned that it is likely that the prevalence of the new variant will exceed Delta variant where there is community transfer. This comes as India’s Omicron figures passed 100 cases on Friday, after recording the highest single-day rise in 24 new cases and affecting 11 states and UTs across the country.

On the case front, India recorded 7,145 new cases of coronavirus and 289 deaths during the 24 hours ending at 1 p.m. 08.00 Saturday. Active cases stand at 84,565, the lowest in over 18 months.

In another development is the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a note on emergency use for Covovax, the anti-Covid vaccine produced by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) under license from Novavax. SII CEO Adar Poonawalla said: “This is another milestone in our fight against Covid-19“Covovax is now WHO approved for emergency use, demonstrating excellent safety and efficacy.”
