At least 26 Maoists killed in meeting with police in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra | India News

NEW DELHI: At least 26 Maoists were shot and killed on Saturday during a meeting with police in Maharashtra‘s Gadchiroli district, PTI reported citing senior officials.
The encounter, which began in the Kotgul-Gyarapatti forest in the early hours of Saturday, was carried out by police C-60 commandos and lasted until late at night.
“We have recovered the bodies of 26 Maoists so far from the forest,” said district police superintendent Ankit Goyal.
While police have not yet confirmed the identity of the slain Maoists, sources said that one of the main rebel leaders is among those killed in the shooting.
Four policemen were also seriously injured in the action and flown to Nagpur by helicopter for treatment, authorities said previously.
Sources had previously told TOI that security forces recovered weapons and other materials from the meeting place.
A massive combing operation is underway to detect more bodies of the extremists.
The Maoists tried to flee with the bodies of their murdered cadres.
