The shooting took place in the morning in Korchi in the Mardintola forest area when a C-60 police command team was conducting a search operation.
At least 26 naxals were killed Saturday in a meeting with Maharashtra police in Gadchiroli district, state Interior Minister Dilip Walse-Patil said.
“Today’s action is historical not only in the history of the State but also of the country. We are proud of our police force, ”said Mr. Walse-Patil.
The meeting reportedly took place in the early hours of Saturday in the Mardintola forest of the Gadchiroli district. A C-60 police command team was conducting the search operation based on the entries when they encountered the Naxals, SP Ankit Goyal of Gadchiroli said.
The team was led by additional SP Somay Munde. Three policemen were injured during the operation and have been admitted to hospital and are said to be stable.
“We have recovered 26 bodies so far from the forest,” Goyal said.
While the identity of the slain Naxals had not yet been determined, sources said one of the top rebel leaders was suspected to be among them.
The district is located on the border of Chhattisgarh.
