Nagpur / Mumbai:

At least 26 Maoists were killed on Saturday in an encounter with police in the Gadchiroli district of eastern Maharashtra, more than 900 kilometers from Mumbai, senior officials said.

“We have recovered the bodies of 26 naxals so far from the forest,” said district police superintendent Ankit Goyal.

The shooting took place in the morning in Korchi in the Mardintola forest area when a C-60 police command team was conducting a search operation led by additional SP Soumya Munde, Goyal said.

While the identity of the slain Maoists had not yet been determined, according to sources, it was suspected that one of the main rebel leaders was among them.

Four policemen were also seriously injured in the action and flown to Nagpur by helicopter for treatment, authorities said previously.

The district is located on the border of Chhattisgarh.
